Evolution is one of those movies I can’t pretend is “good,” but I also can’t stop enjoying every ridiculous second of it. Rewatching it, I was reminded how completely unashamed it is of being dumb, loud, and wildly over-the-top. The jokes are easy, the humor is broad, and the whole thing feels like it was written in a weekend, but somehow that’s exactly why it works. It leans hard into its own silliness.
What always gets me is how committed the cast is to the bit. Duchovny plays it straight in a way that makes the stupid jokes land even harder, and Orlando Jones absolutely carries half the movie on sheer chaotic energy. The alien evolution plot is pure nonsense, but it gives the film permission to keep escalating until it’s so absurd you just have to laugh.
It’s the definition of an enjoyable trash movie: predictable, shallow, and completely charming in its sloppiness. I know it’s bad. I know the comedy is cheap. And I still have a great time every single watch.
Score: 6/10 – Trash, but delightfully fun trash.
